The summer of 2018, I was chosen for the GallupArts first Artist in Residence. Alongside leading photography workshops, artist talks and open studios, I worked on a long term photographic series. Coming from a strong Matriarchal society, I wanted to highlight the Asdzááns (Women) in my life.
I strongly believe the Navajo word Asdzáán holds more than the meaning of "woman". Compassion, intelligence, healing, beauty, selflessness and humbleness are the qualities I associate Asdzáán to. I have always wanted to do a portrait series of the Matriarchs who have made me the woman I am today, without them I would be lost. They continue to teach me and inspire me just by being the incredible individuals they are.
While studying art history I fell in love with the Baroque paintings of the Virgin Mary. The great painters during that time showed the importance of Mary; highlighting her angelic face, draping her in lavish garments and accentuating her holiness with the warm glow around her. When I first saw these paintings I instantly thought of the Matriarchs in my family, I see them as holy beings, blessing this earth with their love and compassion for others.
